Uganda is renowned for having the largest population of mountain gorillas in the world, with a recent census in 2021 recording up to 1,063 individuals. These endangered mountain gorillas can only be found in three countries: Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The most popular gorilla parks are Uganda’s Bwindi Forest and Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park. Revenue earned from gorilla trekking safaris helps fund the national parks and supports local communities living near the parks.
What is a Gorilla Permit?
A gorilla permit is a document issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority that allows you to track mountain gorillas in any of Uganda’s gorilla parks. The permit grants you access to the gorillas for one trek, permitting you to spend one hour with them once you are in their vicinity. At the end of the trek, you receive a certificate of completion as proof of your successful expedition. A Uganda gorilla permit costs US$800 per person. You can book it directly at the UWA offices in Kampala or through a travel agency or Uganda car rental company, often at little or no additional charge.
