Apart from booking your rental car, packing your clothes and shoes and preparing your travel documents, do you ever wonder what more you need to have in your rental car while on a road trip? Remember that you are going to be in an unusual environment, more over on a self drive trip which requires you to be well equipped unlike a guided safari where your local guide is available at all times to give relevant advice during the trip.
As you plan to go for your adventure self-drive safari in Uganda this year, here are the crucial items that you should have in your rental car for successful, safe and comfortable road trip in the cities, parks and remote villages;
First aid kit
Although there are hospitals and clinics across the country, it is advisable to carry a small first aid kit with items such as paracetamol, anti-inflammatory, bandages, gauze, bandages, mercromine and other things that your personal doctor may advise. These will help in case of health issues that require immediate action especially when you are far from hospitals and clinics.
It is also important to provide information regarding any medical condition, allergies and medicines that the passengers in the car may have. In an event or situation where none of you can communicate, this information becomes useful.
Emergency contact numbers
As you pick your rental car from the car rental company, ask the service provider for emergency contact numbers of the police and perhaps fire brigade. You can also take contact information of the roadside assistance team of your Car Rental Company and of people at your destination. Have them on your smart phone and in a note book or piece of paper so that they are available at the time of need.

A map
The use of a paper map may sound old fashioned, but remember old is gold. Although you may think of a google map as an alternative, there are locations in Uganda where internet connection is unreliable. Carrying a map while on a self drive safari is a wise idea; it will help you find your way and major attractions during the trip.
An activated GPS on your phone
Today, the GPS is a great helper on unusual journeys that travelers choose to take on by themselves. If you plan to use the GPS on your Uganda trip, make sure to carry your charger at all time to keep your phone with battery so that it will effectively enable you to get to your destination.
Hand sanitizer
When you step out of your home, you will touch and handle different things which may expose you to infections. Hand sanitizer is an essential item to have in your rental car. While you are in public, for example from the gas station, after eating at a restaurant, shopping at the supermarket or craft shops, disinfect your hands with sanitizer to avoid infections.
Drinks and snacks
While you may want to grab something to eat along the way, after all, that is what makes a Uganda safari enjoyable, it is wise to also have plenty of snacks and drinks in the vehicle. This is more especially if you are travelling with children who may ask for something to eat while you are on a long highway where supermarkets may be quite far away.
Wipes, napkins and a plastic bag
These elements are essential for hygiene while traveling. They will help to keep both the travelers and the car clean. Use the napkins and wipes to keep yourselves and other surfaces sanitized and then drop them in the plastic bag. After eating, keep all rubbish in the car until you get to a location where you can dispose of it.
A flashlight
When you leave your home that has a good lighting to the remote destinations of Uganda, you will be sensitive to the dark and therefore want a flashlight in handy. Even if you don’t plan to stay out till late, you could unexpectedly find yourself leaving the restaurant to your room late night and need a flashlight to keep you from tripping or falling.
