Central Kampala
If you want to see the busy city life of Kampala, the central part of the town gives a clear picture. Also locally referred to down-town, it gets vibrant from around 6:30 to late evening. Rush hours are characterized with tight traffic, crowds of people and hawkers singing loud to attract buyers. Central Kampala is comprises of big shopping malls, food markets, local business centres, and craft shop markets among others. For safety, a local tour guide or driver is recommended if you want to visit central Kampala.
Rubaga and Namirembe hills
These two hills are mostly known for religious purposes. On each of them sits a prominent church; Rubaga church for Catholics and Namirembe cathedral for Anglicans on Rubaga and Namirembe hill respectively. When you rent a car in Kampala, it is just few minutes’ drive to the hill peaks where the churches are located. Both churches have interesting historical stories attached to them and their architecture is beautiful and rare.
Mengo hill
If you are into culture, visit Mengo hill to see and learn about Buganda. It is home to Kabaka’s palace where tourists get a chance to learn about the former and current kingship. Buganda parliament is just 5-7 minutes drive from the palace and the road that connects the two is decorated with sculptures representing the totems of the Baganda.
Kasubi hill
Kasubi hill houses an important cultural site in Buganda: it has the official burial grounds for Kabakas (Buganda kings). Four of the former Kabakas are buried here and the tourist attraction is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. While here, there’s a lot to learn about the burial ceremonies of Buganda, especially when you get into the main shrine which is a thatched house.
Old Kampala hill
The largest mosque and one of the most spectacular ones in Uganda sits on top of Old Kampala hill. Gadaffi mosque is a highlight for city tours in Kampala. It is easy to access and offers clear lovely views of the city and surrounding areas. Ensure to dress decently when visiting the mosque.
